Big Ben - Information
Big Ben is a world-renowned clock tower located in the city of London, England. It is the nickname given to the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster. The tower is officially called Elizabeth Tower since 2012, but almost everyone calls it Big Ben. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in London, drawing millions of visitors every year.
The origins of Big Ben date back to 1834 when the Palace of Westminster has suffered a fire that destroyed it. Later, it was rebuilt in its current neo-gothic style, and the clock tower was added. The clock was designed by Augustus Pugin, and the bell was cast by John Warner & Sons in 1858. The clock began working on May 31, 1859, and the chimes of Big Ben were heard for the first time on July 11, 1859. The bell weighs more than 13 tons (13,760 kg) and is seven feet (2.1 meters) tall and nine feet (2.7 meters) in diameter. The clock face is 23 feet (7 meters) in diameter and is illuminated at night. The clock has four dials, one on each side of the tower, and is accurate to within a few seconds.
Big Ben has been featured in many films, books, and TV shows, including the James Bond movie Skyfall, Mary Poppins, and Doctor Who. Visitors can tour the clock tower with advance booking, which allows them to climb the 334 steps to the top for breathtaking views of London.
