The temple is dedicated to Lord Guruvayurappan, a form of Lord Vishnu with the face of Lord Krishna. The temple is considered one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in India, attracting thousands of devotees every year. It is believed to be one of the 108 most important divya desams (holy abodes of Lord Vishnu) in India.
According to legend, the temple was built by Guru (preceptor of the gods) and Vayu (god of the wind) on the orders of Lord Vishnu.
