Lahaina - Information
Lahaina is a charming and historic town located on the west coast of Maui, Hawaii. Once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Lahaina was a bustling center of commerce in the 19th century and the site of many important events in Hawaiian history. It was also a major whaling port in the 19th century, and visitors can explore this history at the Whaling Museum. The museum features exhibits on the island's whaling industry, including a fully restored whaleboat and a collection of harpoons and tools used by whalers.
The Banyan Tree, one of Lahaina's most prominent historical landmarks, is the largest banyan tree in the United States. Planted in 1873 by Sheriff William Owen Smith to monumentalize the 50th anniversary of the first Protestant mission in Hawaii, the tree now covers more than two-thirds of an acre and is a popular spot for picnics and events. Another remarkable attraction is the historic Baldwin Home Museum. Built in 1834 for the Rev. Dwight Baldwin, the home is the oldest surviving house in Lahaina and is now maintained by the Lahaina Restoration Foundation as a museum showcasing the lifestyle of a missionary family in 19th-century Hawaii.
