Tahoe City is a scenic and serene city located in the heart of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, bordering the popular Lake Tahoe. The city, once a trading post and a logging town, has now transformed into a bustling resort destination. The town spans just over 7.5 square miles and sits at an elevation of 6,225 feet above sea level.
The history of Tahoe City is deeply tied to the surrounding forests. The city was first settled by loggers who harvested the timber from the surrounding forests. During the early 1900s, the city became a prominent trading post as mule trains transported supplies to the mining towns in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Today, visitors can explore the past of the region at the Gatekeeper’s Museum, home to exhibits showcasing the history of the area from the Native American Tribes and Washoe culture to Tahoe City's unique and thriving cultural landscape.
In the modern era, Tahoe City is well known for its year-round recreational activities. This scenic city is home to some of the country's best skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling opportunities in the winter and features family-friendly hiking and biking trails, paddleboarding, and kayaking on sparkling Lake Tahoe in the summer. Tourists can enjoy boating tours, sailboat rides, and fishing charters to catch salmon, trout, and other species in the lake.
