With a population of around 1,400 people, it is best known for its historic golf course, stunning beaches, and scenic views. The history of Dornoch dates back to the 13th century, when it was granted a royal charter as a Royal Burgh. It was later a major center of the wool trade in Scotland and has been an important religious center for centuries, with the Dornoch Cathedral being a prominent landmark of the town. One of the main attractions of Dornoch is the Royal Dornoch Golf Course, which has been consistently ranked as one of the best golf courses in the world. It was founded in 1877 and has hosted numerous prestigious golf tournaments over the years, including the Scottish Open in 2016. Another highlight of the town is its beautiful beaches, such as Dornoch Beach and Embo Beach, which offer breathtaking views of the North Sea and are popular locations for water sports. In addition to golf and beaches, Dornoch also has a rich cultural heritage. The Old Town Jail, a former prison, is now a museum and offers an insight into the town's history. The Carnegie Courthouse, built in 1901, is also worth a visit as it now houses a museum of local history and art gallery featuring works from the Highland artists. The Dornoch Castle Hotel, located in the heart of the town, is believed to have been built in the 15th century and is still a popular destination for visitors.
