Barnard Castle is a market town located in the Teesdale district of County Durham in the north of England. The town is best known for its 12th-century castle, which was founded by Bernard de Balliol in the 12th century. The castle is an English Heritage site and is open to visitors all year round. Apart from the castle, there are many other interesting things to see and do in Barnard Castle. The Bowes Museum, for example, is a world-class museum that has a wonderful collection of art and antiques. The museum was opened in 1892 and is located in a magnificent French chateau-style building. Visitors can see works of art by many famous artists, including Canaletto, El Greco, and Goya. Another great attraction in Barnard Castle is the Teesdale Way, which is a long-distance walking path that runs for 92 miles from the source of the River Tees in the Pennines to the coast at Teesmouth. The path passes through some of the most stunning countryside in the north of England, and there are many interesting places to stop along the way, including the waterfall at High Force and the picturesque village of Middleton-in-Teesdale.
