Aberdeen - Information
Aberdeen, also known as the 'Granite City' or the 'Silver City' due to its impressive architecture, is located in the northeast of Scotland. It is the third most populous city in Scotland and has a rich history dating back to the 8th century. The Marischal College building is considered the second-largest granite building in the world. The building was opened in 1906 and currently serves as the administrative headquarters of the University of Aberdeen. The university itself was founded in 1495, making it one of the oldest universities in the UK.
Another interesting historical site in the city is St. Machar's Cathedral. The construction of the cathedral began in the 12th century and it has undergone several renovations throughout the centuries. It is an excellent example of medieval architecture and is still used for worship today.
The city has a rich maritime history, and the Aberdeen Maritime Museum is an excellent place to explore it. The museum hosts several exhibitions on the city's history and its connection to the sea. The museum is located in Provost Ross's House, a 16th-century building that survived the Great Fire of Aberdeen in 1674.
Aberdeen is also home to many beautiful parks and gardens. Duthie Park, located in the city center, is one of the most popular parks and features a wide range of activities for visitors. With its boating lake, rose garden, and large playground, it is a great place to spend an afternoon. For those interested in the supernatural, Aberdeen is said to be one of the most haunted cities in Scotland. Many ghost tours take sightseers through the city's dark alleyways and historic sites.
