It is known worldwide for its annual Running of the Bulls festival, where bulls are released into the streets and people run alongside them. However, there is so much more to this fascinating city than just this one event. Pamplona's history dates back to the Roman era when it was known as Pompaelo. It then became a significant city during the Middle Ages, serving as a pilgrimage stop along the Camino de Santiago route. Today, the city's rich history can be seen in the various landmarks and monuments dotted throughout the city, such as the 16th-century Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria and the ancient Citadel of Pamplona. Aside from its historical significance, Pamplona is also a thriving modern city with plenty of things to see and do. The city has a lively nightlife scene with numerous bars and clubs, particularly in the historic quarter. Foodies will be spoilt for choice with the numerous restaurants serving traditional Navarran cuisine, such as pintxos (small bites served on bread) and hearty stews. Furthermore, Pamplona is a great base for exploring the surrounding countryside and nearby towns. The nearby Pyrenees offer plenty of opportunities for hiking and skiing, whilst picturesque villages such as Olite and Estella are perfect for a day trip.
