Willemstad is the vibrant capital city of the island of Curacao, situated in the southern Caribbean Sea. The historic centre of Willemstad is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. It is famed for its colorful Dutch colonial architecture and stunning views of the sea. The city was first settled by the Dutch West India Company in the 17th century and was named after the Dutch prince, Willem III. The Dutch influence is evident in the distinctive architecture, in particular the gabled roofs and pastel-colored facades. The city's fortifications, including Fort Amsterdam, played an important role in protecting the island against pirates and rival European powers. Aside from its rich history, the city boasts beautiful beaches and a wealth of cultural attractions. Visitors can explore the Curacao Museum, which is housed in a former military hospital built in 1853, and learn about the island's history and culture. One modern trivia for visitors is that the world-famous liqueur, Blue Curacao, is made on the island since the 19th century. The floating market, where fresh produce is sold by Venezuelan merchants on boats, is also a popular tourist spot. The city's Punda district offers ample opportunities for shopping and dining, and the nearby Queen Emma Bridge, also known as the Swinging Old Lady, is an iconic feature of Willemstad. The Pontoon Bridge itself is a modern trivia, being a unique floating structure that opens for ship traffic.
