Historically, Maragogi has been inhabited by indigenous tribes and was later settled by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Like much of Brazil, the area has a rich history of sugar cane plantations and the remnants of these can still be seen in the surrounding countryside. In fact, Maragogi was once a major sugar production center, and evidence of this can be found in the historic sugar mills that dot the region.
