Belo Horizonte is the sixth-largest city in Brazil and the capital of the state of Minas Gerais. Founded in 1897, it was planned and built to replace the old state capital, Ouro Preto, which had become too small and outdated. Belo Horizonte is also known as BH and is a city of many parks, museums, and monuments. One of the most important landmarks in the city is the Pampulha Modern Ensemble, a group of buildings designed by the famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The ensemble includes the São Francisco de Assis church, the Juscelino Kubitschek House, the Yacht Club, and the Pampulha Art Museum. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016. Belo Horizonte is famous for its traditional food such as pão de queijo (cheese bread), feijão tropeiro (beans with bacon and sausage), and tutu de feijão (bean puree with manioc flour and sausage). The city also has a lively nightlife scene, with many bars and nightclubs that play various styles of music, including traditional Brazilian music and modern pop. The city is also a hub for business, education, and research. It has several universities, including the Federal University of Minas Gerais, and is home to many high-tech companies and startups. Belo Horizonte is also known for its soccer teams, including Atlético Mineiro and Cruzeiro, who play at the Mineirão stadium, one of the largest in the country.
